The central switch behind this change is labeled Show Activity Status, housed inside the app's messages and story replies sub-menu. By default, Instagram automatically broadcasts two distinct data points to anyone you have messaged or tagged: your real-time presence through an online status icon and historical records through a last active timestamp (such as "Active 24m ago" or "Active yesterday").
When you flip the master toggle off, the system wipes your trail from mutual message threads. Your friends, business contacts, and casual acquaintances will no longer see when you open the app, scroll Reels, or compose drafts. The green dot indicator vanishes from your avatar across the message inbox status list. To an outside observer, your profile looks perpetually dormant.
The feature operates as a simple binary switch within Meta's cloud servers. It does not delete your account history or alter algorithmic feed delivery. It simply revokes the permissions that transmit your real-time network pings to the client devices of your contacts.
