Mobile changes typically propagate to linked sessions, but desktop users face specific quirks. If you run multiple accounts or access direct messages through desktop Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, you should verify your Instagram web browser settings directly.
Navigate to instagram.com on your computer and log in. Click the More menu (represented by three horizontal lines) in the lower-left corner of the sidebar, then select Settings. In the left navigation rail, click Messages and story replies, followed by Activity status. Toggle off the switch next to Show Activity Status.
Multi-account users must exercise extra caution. The toggle applies on an account-by-account basis.
