This is not the first time Hollywood casting lore entangled Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill. Their parallel paths date back to the mid-2000s, centered around another iconic franchise: Superman.
In 2003, director Brett Ratner worked on an unproduced project titled Superman: Flyby, penned by J.J. Abrams. Bomer was Ratner's top choice to don the red cape. When Ratner stepped away and Bryan Singer took over the project to direct Superman Returns (2006), Brandon Routh landed the role. Cavill had also auditioned for Flyby during that period. Later, in 2013, Cavill finally wore the suit in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, while Bomer voiced the hero in the animated feature Superman: Unbound.
Because their names shared space on shortlists for comic book icons, audiences began treating them as interchangeable archetypes. When one vacates a high-profile hero role, the other automatically tops social media wish lists. But their career paths show distinct artistic interests. Cavill leans heavily toward action, historical epics, and video game adaptations like Warhammer 40,000. Bomer pursues character-driven dramas, theatrical stage productions, and independent films that demand different skill sets than heavy stunt choreography.
