Long before casual reality TV watchers knew his surname, Donnell Harvey was a household name in American grassroots basketball. Emerging from Randolph-Clay High School in Cuthbert, Georgia, the 6-foot-8 forward dominated high school competitions with unmatched stamina. In 1999, Harvey took home both the Gatorade National Player of the Year award and the MVP trophy at the prestigious McDonald's All-American Game, edging out future NBA stars.
Harvey chose to play for head coach Billy Donovan at the University of Florida, a decision that transformed the Gators' basketball trajectory. In his lone collegiate season (1999, 2000), Harvey averaged 10.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Alongside teammates like Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem, Harvey powered Florida on an electrifying run through the NCAA Tournament, reaching the 2000 National Championship contest against Michigan State. His motor under the boards established him as one of the draft class's premier frontcourt prospects.
