By his early forties, Johar reevaluated what family meant to him. Rather than waiting for a romantic partner to complete an idealized domestic picture, he pursued parenthood on his own terms. In February 2017, his twins, Yash and Roohi Johar, were born via gestational surrogacy at Masina Hospital in Mumbai.
Naming his son Yash after his late father and his daughter Roohi as an anagram of his mother Hiroo, Johar signaled that his family unit was complete. The legal path required careful medical and administrative coordination, completed well before India overhauled its Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy regulations. His decision inspired other prominent figures in Indian entertainment to explore non-traditional family planning.
Parenthood reshuffled his priorities. In recent interviews, Johar explained that bringing children into his life removed the gnawing sense of loneliness he wrote about in his memoir. He no longer feels pressured to find a spouse simply to fill an empty house.
