In the third week of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the area surrounding northwest Kyiv saw heavy artillery exchanges. Russian units were attempting to encircle the capital, making villages like Bucha, Irpin, and Horenka frontline flashpoints. Oleksandra Kuvshynova, known to friends and colleagues as Sasha, had been hired just weeks earlier to assist the Fox News reporting team. She arranged interviews, translated military briefings, and navigated local checkpoints.
On the morning of March 14, 2022, a team consisting of Kuvshynova, Zakrzewski, and Hall departed downtown Kyiv in an unmarked civilian vehicle. They were tracking rumors that Ukrainian forces had intercepted Russian units near the city perimeter. Within hours, their car came under incoming artillery strikes. Zakrzewski and Kuvshynova died instantly at the scene. Hall suffered severe burns, lost half of one leg, lost his foot on the other leg, and lost sight in one eye. While initial media reports framed the incident as an inevitable war-zone casualty, Kuvshynova's family retained counsel in New York to investigate whether management reckless decisions sent them straight into an ambush.
