Throughout the 1990s, Steve Young's dating life was an ongoing topic of cultural curiosity within both sports journalism and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was the direct great-great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, an Ivy League-educated law school graduate, and a Super Bowl XXIX champion. Yet, at age 37, he was still unmarried in a faith culture that places immense theological weight on early marriage and family structure.
Young later acknowledged that severe separation anxiety and career pressures kept him emotionally guarded. Sensing this struggle, Elder Neal A. Maxwell, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, visited Young and gave him an official priesthood blessing. The blessing specifically addressed his fears about commitment, promising that he would recognize the right partner when the opportunity arrived.
Not long afterward, mutual associates set Young up on a blind date with Barbara Graham. Graham, who had worked in public relations and modeling, lived in Arizona and knew relatively little about the intense scrutiny surrounding San Francisco 49ers football. Friends noted that Graham evaluated Steve solely as an individual rather than an iconic athlete, cutting through the public persona that had insulated him for years.
