An introduction rarely ends after a single name is spoken. Failing to respond with the appropriate courtesy phrase can make an otherwise confident introduction feel awkward.
When someone introduces themselves to you, the classic response is Mucho gusto ("Much pleasure" or "Nice to meet you"). It works in any setting, formal or informal, and requires no grammatical adjustments regardless of gender.
Another standard choice is Encantado ("Delighted"). Unlike Mucho gusto, this word is an adjective that must reflect the gender of the speaker:
- Male speakers say: Encantado.
- Female speakers say: Encantada.
To return the sentiment when someone says Mucho gusto first, reply with Igualmente ("Likewise") or El gusto es mío ("The pleasure is mine").
If you need to ask the other person's name in return, use ¿Cómo te llamas? in casual settings. If speaking to an elder, an executive, or a client, switch to the formal address: ¿Cómo se llama usted?
