Relying solely on conversion charts leads to high return rates. The most reliable way to select between US 8.5 and 9 when buying an EU 39 is to measure your foot in raw centimeters.
Place a blank sheet of paper against a flat wall on a hard floor. Step onto the paper with your heel firmly touching the wall, wearing the exact style of socks you plan to use with the shoe. Trace the outline of the longest point of your foot, which is often the second toe rather than the hallux. Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to your mark using a metric ruler.
Compare that physical measurement to your target shoe's specs:
- If your foot measures 24.1 to 24.5 cm (9.5 to 9.65 inches): An EU 39 will provide generous comfort room, fitting similarly to a US Women's 8.5.
- If your foot measures 24.6 to 25.0 cm (9.7 to 9.85 inches): You are the target demographic for an EU 39. It will fit like a standard, structured US Women's 8.5 to 9.
- If your foot measures 25.1 to 25.5 cm (9.9 to 10.05 inches): An EU 39 will feel tight at the front. Step up to an EU 40, which delivers the true functional room of an American 9 or 9.5.
Add 7 to 10 millimeters of functional clearance to your barefoot measurement for closed-toe walking shoes, or 12 to 15 millimeters for running shoes and winter boots that require thick socks. That total is your target insole length.
