The confusion surrounding James Lawson persists largely because viewers recall that someone named "James" received an emotional on-screen tribute during the height of the show's cultural popularity. The series honored a small, select group of individuals who died during the show's run.

The primary source of the "James" confusion is James Heltibridle. The Season 7 premiere, titled "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be," drew over 17 million live viewers eager to discover who fell victim to Negan's baseball bat. When the harrowing hour ended, the screen presented an "In Loving Memory of James Heltibridle" title card. Millions of viewers registered the first name, but over years of casual conversation and fading memory, fragments of that tribute blurred into the far more common surname "Lawson."
