Tyson’s youth in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn revolved around street crime, petty robberies, and frequent arrests. By age 12, he had been arrested more than 30 times. Authorities transferred him to the Tryon School for Boys in upstate New York, where counselor and former boxer Bobby Stewart recognized Tyson’s extraordinary raw punching power and introduced him to veteran manager Cus D’Amato.

D’Amato operated a gym above the police station in Catskill, New York. Recognizing rare kinetic efficiency in the teenager, D’Amato secured legal custody of Tyson following the death of Tyson’s mother in 1982. Inside the Catskill house, D’Amato, alongside trainer Teddy Atlas and later Kevin Rooney, rebuilt Tyson’s mechanics from scratch.

D'Amato drilled Tyson in the peek-a-boo style, emphasizing rapid head movement, tight guard positioning, and explosive counterpunching inside an opponent’s reach. Tyson’s discipline transformed overnight. The gym became a laboratory where a traumatized kid from Brooklyn absorbed boxing history through vintage film reels, studying heavyweights from Jack Dempsey to Sonny Liston. D’Amato predicted that Tyson would break Floyd Patterson’s record to become the youngest world champion. D'Amato died in November 1985 at age 77, one year before his prediction came true.
