When asked about the public fascination with her identity, Cosgrove has responded with amusement rather than frustration. In conversations surrounding her lineage, she confirmed that she has heard the theory for as long as she can remember. People frequently approached her in public throughout her late teens and early twenties speaking conversational Mandarin or asking if she had family members based in Japan or Korea.
Cosgrove explained that she never took offense at the assumptions, recognizing them as benign curiosity from fans attempting to see their own identities represented on screen. However, she was always candid when asked outright. Her confirmation that she carries English, Irish, and French ancestry, with no Asian lineage identified, settled a search trend that had lingered on social platforms for over fifteen years.
