Scott Matthew Davidson's final run remains etched into the visual history of the disaster. Stationed at Ladder Company 118 on Middagh Street in Brooklyn Heights, Davidson and five fellow firefighters, Lt. Robert Regan, Joseph Agnello, Vernon Cherry, Leon Smith Jr., and Peter Vega, responded immediately after the second plane struck the South Tower.
Photographer Aaron McLamb captured their rig speeding across the Brooklyn Bridge against a backdrop of billowing black smoke. That photograph became one of the defining images of American civic bravery. Upon arrival at the World Trade Center site, Ladder 118 members entered the Marriott World Trade Center (Hotel 3), helping evacuate hundreds of civilian guests before the collapse of both towers obliterated the structure. None of the six men on the rig survived. September 11 casualty records later confirmed their actions directly spared dozens of trapped workers, cementing Ladder 118's status among the most revered units in the department's history.
