Everything changed for Allan during Season 2. In "An Allan Adventure," the creative team pushed the red cynic into the spotlight, giving him a standalone mission: retrieve paperclips and a piece of Swiss cheese. The plot read like an unproduced 1990s point-and-click computer game, but the execution pulled straight from modern action cinema.
The episode remains a high-water mark on every critical Smiling Friends episode ranking compiled by outlets like Paste Magazine. Instead of staying grounded in the office with Mr. Boss and Glep, Allan traveled through sewer systems, dodged military helicopters, and encountered predatory aquatic predators. The animators mixed hand-drawn 2D animation with rotoscoped live-action backgrounds, creating a jarring juxtaposition against Allan's flat crimson hue.
The climax showcased Allan clinging to a speeding aircraft to preserve a block of dairy. Cusack gave the scene no grand monologue. Allan simply grunted, held on with unnatural tensile strength, and secured his breakfast. The internet instantly latched onto the sequence. Clips of the chase racked up tens of millions of views across TikTok and YouTube, demonstrating that the character could carry an entire narrative without Pim or Charlie serving as the comedic straight man.
