Panicked pet owners often confuse other domestic parasites with cat fleas. Telling them apart prevents misdirected treatments that waste money and leave pests untouched.

When comparing fleas vs bed bugs, body shape and behavior provide clear distinction. Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are dorsoventrally flattened, meaning they are wide and squashed from top to bottom like an apple seed. Fleas are compressed sideways, designed to slide between hairs. Bed bugs cannot jump, crawl relatively slowly across mattresses, and feed almost exclusively at night on human hosts, rarely establishing residence on pets. Cat fleas stay on the host animal whenever possible, feed continuously, and jump when disturbed.

Ticks are arachnids rather than insects. Ticks feature eight legs in their nymph and adult stages, move sluggishly, and anchor their mouthparts deeply into the skin for days at a time without jumping. Cat lice, while also wingless insects, move slowly through the fur, cement their white nits firmly onto individual hair shafts, and do not jump.
