Deciding between plastic physical gift cards and email-based digital alternatives comes down to convenience versus gifting presentation.
Digital e-gift cards arrive instantaneously or on a timed schedule, sent straight to the recipient's inbox. They feature an alphanumeric code, an embedded URL linking to a hosted balance page, and a high-resolution barcode. Smartphone users can tap an "Add to Apple Wallet" or "Save to Google Pay" link, keeping the balance easily accessible without opening an email client. This minimizes the risk of physical loss; the card persists in digital storage even if a user deletes the initial confirmation message.
Physical cards carry undeniable tactile appeal for holiday packages, birthdays, and corporate giveaways. They feature iconic cinematic cover art, embossed card numbers, and protective foil covering the security PIN. The primary vulnerability lies in physical misplacement. Under Federal Trade Commission guidelines and the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act, gift card balances cannot expire for at least 5 years from the date of activation or fund addition. Regal goes beyond this federal floor: corporate policy dictates that retail gift balances do not expire, nor do they erode through dormancy fees. However, if a plastic card without an associated digital backup is lost or stolen, Regal will not replace the remaining cash value without proof of purchase, the original retail activation receipt, and the complete 16-digit identifier.
