When Christina launched her self-titled debut album in 1999, commercial bubblegum pop dominated the airwaves. Yet beneath the polished radio hits, her personal history remained unresolved. That changed decisively with her 2002 album, Stripped. On the deeply personal track "I'm OK," produced with Linda Perry, Christina laid bare the details of Fausto's violence, singing directly about bruised skin, slammed doors, and the sound of footsteps on the floorboards.
The song caused friction within her extended family, but Christina refused to sanitize her childhood. In 2006, she followed up with "Oh Mother" on the vintage-inspired double album Back to Basics, publicly thanking her mother for having the courage to leave a destructive marriage. Music became both an indictment of Fausto's actions and a public declaration of survival.
