The decision to mount a major home-produced staging of Oklahoma! marks a calculated shift for downtown Tulsa. While the Tulsa Performing Arts Center routinely hosts multi-week engagements of commercial Broadway tours through Celebrity Attractions, this summer initiative keeps both creative control and payroll within the regional economy. Production leaders spent months auditioning talent throughout Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Norman, and regional tribal jurisdictions to build the ensemble.
The narrative retains Richard Rodgers' lush score and Oscar Hammerstein II's foundational book, originally adapted from Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs. Riggs, a Cherokee playwright born near Claremore, Oklahoma, embedded specific frontier vernacular and emotional tension into his work. Local directors have cited that native source material as an anchor for this 2026 production, stripping away decades of cartoonish caricatures in favor of authentic territorial cadence.
