For years, viewers assumed "P. Sherman" was simply a random, ordinary name picked out of a phone book. Stanton later revealed the phrase was an internal studio pun rooted in multicultural camaraderie during production.
A sizable portion of Pixar’s animation and technical crew hailed from the Philippines. In several regional Philippine dialects and accents, the English consonant "F" is traditionally pronounced with a soft "P" sound. Stanton frequently joked around with the studio's Filipino animators, who playfully pronounced the word "fisherman" as "pesherman."
Stanton wrote the moniker onto the diver's mask as a fond nod to his crew. Dr. Sherman was, quite literally, "P. Sherman", the fisherman who snatched Nemo from the open reef.
