To understand Sisto’s longevity, one must look at how deliberately he avoided being typecast after teen comedies. In 2001, Alan Ball cast him as Billy Chenowith in HBO’s groundbreaking drama Six Feet Under. As the brilliant, volatile, bipolar brother of Brenda Chenowith (Rachel Griffiths), Sisto delivered a haunting, raw performance that earned widespread critical praise and multiple Screen Actors Guild nominations. The role signaled a sharp turn toward psychological complexity, establishing him as an actor capable of handling dark thematic terrain.
By 2008, Sisto stepped directly into Dick Wolf’s flagship empire, joining the original Law & Order as Detective Cyrus Lupo. Partnered first with Jesse L. Martin and later with Anthony Anderson, Sisto anchored the NYPD homicide beat for the series’ final three seasons before its initial 2010 cancellation. He then pivoted completely against expectations, taking on broad suburban satire as single father George Altman in the ABC sitcom Suburgatory from 2011 to 2014. The comedy proved his comic timing extended far beyond adolescent arrogance.
