Between 1983 and 1984, Labyorteaux starred as computer prodigy Richie Adler in CBS’s Whiz Kids. The series preceded the personal computing boom, presenting teenage hackers using dial-up modems to solve municipal crimes. Though it lasted only one season, it established Labyorteaux outside the shadow of nineteenth-century pioneer garb.
In 1986, he took the male lead in Wes Craven’s sci-fi horror hybrid Deadly Friend, playing teenage robotics prodigy Paul Conway opposite Kristy Swanson. The film became an enduring cult classic, remembered for its bizarre synthesis of teenage melodrama and graphic body horror.
