Bülent Ersoy was born in Istanbul in June 1952. She received rigorous conservatory training from premier masters of Ottoman classical music, including Müzeyyen Senar. Ersoy broke out in the early 1970s. Her rich vocal texture, effortless command of intricate makam modal structures, and stage presence captivated audiences across class and political divides.
During this early era, Ersoy performed with an androgynous glamour. Heavy stage makeup, opulent jewelry, and theatrical attire challenged traditional masculine norms without directly threatening state authority. She sold millions of records and packed elite music halls (*gazinos*) in Istanbul and Ankara. Behind the stage curtains, however, the conflict between her true self and public expectations intensified. By the close of the decade, Ersoy resolved to align her physical body with her internal identity.
