The fundamental reason Bülent Ersoy transitioned was simple: survival. During public interviews across four decades, she repeatedly articulated that continuing life as a man was psychological torment. Her male persona felt like an elaborate disguise that alienated her from her own existence.
In April 1981, she flew to London to undergo sex reassignment surgery under the care of pioneering British surgeons. The procedure was physically grueling and medically complex. Ersoy took the leap without institutional support, psychiatric roadmaps, or family backing. At age 28, she staked her voice, financial fortune, and freedom on this intervention.
She did not seek to slip quietly into an ordinary life. Ersoy returned to Turkey as an openly transgender woman, demanding that the public, the press, and the legal system address her as female. The response from the state was swift and merciless.
