On September 30, 2020, Minaj gave birth to their first child, a son whose actual birth name has been kept completely private by the couple. Minaj routinely refers to him as "Papa Bear" across interviews and social updates. The child’s early years coincided directly with Petty’s house arrest, creating an insular family life inside their heavily secured Southern California mansions.
Minaj has shared intimate glimpses of motherhood, noting that having a child shifted her personal priorities and slowed down her touring cadence. At the same time, the family faced heavy civil litigation. In 2021, Jennifer Hough, the victim in Petty's 1995 case, filed a lawsuit alleging that Minaj and Petty subjected her to direct intimidation, harassment, and bribery attempts to coerce her into recanting her allegations. Hough described living in fear as diehard fans targeted her online.
Minaj was dropped from Hough's claims of intentional infliction of emotional distress in early 2022 after legal maneuvers, while claims against Petty were resolved in separate proceedings. The lawsuit kept Petty's 1990s record at the center of entertainment discourse, forcing Minaj to frequently defend her household on digital stages.
