One of the sharpest controversies surrounding the Bishnoi family centers on his legal defense. With more than 80 criminal cases spanning murder, extortion, and charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Bishnoi’s legal fees across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan run into millions of rupees every year.

His cousin, Ramesh Bishnoi, has repeatedly addressed the source of these funds in public interviews. The extended family asserts that the money spent on advocates comes directly from the ancestral estate. Ramesh Bishnoi pointed out that the family sells substantial crop yields annually, primarily cotton, wheat, and mustard, generating between ₹40 lakh and ₹60 lakh per year in legitimate agricultural income. According to the family, these earnings are directed straight to legal retainers, court appearances, and writ petitions across high courts and trial jurisdictions.

Investigating agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and state anti-gangster task forces, offer a starkly different assessment. Counter-extortion probes assert that the Bishnoi syndicate commands a vast protection racket targeting Punjabi music producers, real estate moguls in the National Capital Region (NCR), and toll plaza operators across northern India.

Investigators claim that while legitimate agricultural income provides a convenient alibi, the syndicate uses informal Hawala channels, shell accounts, and proxy businesses to move funds. The parents themselves, aging and largely confined to their Fazilka residence, have faced rounds of questioning regarding their bank accounts and asset declarations. While prosecutors have not charged Lavinder Singh or Sunita Bishnoi as active operational conspirators, the flow of family money remains under sustained surveillance.
