A major artistic question facing any future production is cast continuity. The tragedy of the past decade is that many performers who populated the front porches of the franchise are gone.
John Witherspoon, whose turn as Craig’s father Willie Jones provided the series with unforgettable comedic timing, died in 2019. Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., who embodied Deebo, passed away in late 2020. Comedian Anthony "A.J." Johnson, who portrayed the petty thief Ezal, died in 2021. Writing around these absences requires more than passing jokes; it demands genuine narrative weight. A fourth film cannot simply copy the formula of the 1995 release without addressing the loss of its neighborhood veterans.
Furthermore, Chris Tucker has remained firm regarding his non-involvement. Having shifted his professional focus toward stand-up comedy and faith-aligned projects, Tucker repeatedly stated that financial incentives will not persuade him to play Smokey again. Without Tucker, Witherspoon, and Lister, a direct reunion is structurally impossible. Any viable Friday 4 script must focus on Craig and Debra navigating middle age and mentoring an entirely new generation of neighborhood youth.
