Characters belonging to global media franchises eventually outgrow the authors who created them. Stephenie Meyer constructed Edward Cullen as an unbending portrait of early-20th-century chivalry and traditional romance. The text of the novels leaves no ambiguity about his internal desires or his devotion to Bella Swan.
Yet digital fan communities operate under their own rules. Between Robert Pattinson’s gleefully subversive press legacy and the current generation's embrace of camp aesthetics, Edward Cullen has acquired a permanent second life. The speculation surrounding his sexuality proves that audiences will always find ways to dismantle traditional archetypes, rewriting pop culture icons to reflect a broader, more complicated world.
